WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRAYER OF APPROACH

PRELUDE

CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 146 )

One: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

All: I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

One: Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth,

for there is no help in them.

All: When they breathe their last, they return to earth, and in that day their thoughts perish.

One: Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! whose hope is in the Lord their God;

All: Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; who keeps his promise for ever;

One: Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, and food to those who hunger.

All: The Lord loves the righteous; the Lord cares for the stranger;

One: he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked.

All: The Lord shall reign for ever, Hallelujah! Let us worship the Lord!

CALL TO CONFESSION

Nothing can be hidden from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth,
whose wisdom is endless, whose mercy is great. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON)

Merciful God, forgive us our gullibility.  Jesus taught us to beware those who like to walk around in long robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplace; to beware those who seek the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets.  He warned against those who, for the sake of appearances, say long prayers.  Teach us to be wise in following your ways and to not be enticed by the riches and power of men.  Remind us of the widows who were willing to give out of their poverty so much more than those who delighted in their own success and abundance.  Have mercy on us God, and turn our hearts towards you. Inspire us to give freely of ourselves so that we might come to love Jesus more than the world.  Amen.

One: Now that we have confessed as a body, let us take the truths that have troubled our hearts to God silently.  Let us not be worried about the awkwardness of silence, as we take some time to focus on speaking with our God.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

One: Since God has forgiven us in Christ,
let us forgive one another.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
All: And also with you.

One: Let us share signs of peace with one another.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH    The Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

CALL FOR THE OFFERING

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it. Let us return to God the offerings of our life and the gifts of the earth. Let us offer them with joy in our hearts and a deep sense of gratitude.

DOXOLOGY

PRAYER OF DEDICATION (UNISON)

Heavenly Father, we know that your gifts to us are beyond abundant.  Like the widow who shared her meager meal with Elijah and found that the jar of meal and the jar of oil never emptied - your love to us flows continuously.

May we be inspired by the widow at the treasury who gave all that she had to live on - to you.  Teach us the kind of faith that leads us to offer you our all.  May our gifts of time and talent and tithes be used to share the light of your Son in the present darkness.   Amen.
